PEMBROKE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Policy on Bomb Threats

In the event of a call or notice to the effect that a bomb has been placed in a school building or property, the following procedures are to be followed:

  1. Upon receiving the phone call, the exact time, date and content of the call must be recorded immediately. It is also extremely important to note the phone line on which the call is received.
  2. Immediately after receiving the call, the Principal should be notified. The person receiving the call should convey in writing all required information to the Principal. If the Principal is not available, the person receiving the call should report to the administrator in charge or to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of School.
  3. If the call was not originally received by the fire department or the police department, these departments should be notified immediately along with the Superintendent of Schools. Both departments should be asked to respond immediately. It should be requested that their arrival at the school be as inconspicuous as possible.
  1. After evaluation of the circumstances by the police department, fire department and the school administration, school officials will make a decision regarding the appropriate response to the threat. Possible responses include, but are not limited to: evacuation of the entire building and the subsequent search of the building; the evacuation of a portion of the building and the subsequent search of that portion of the building; declaration of an emergency condition in the building with the restriction of all students, faculty and staff to their classrooms until a search of the building has been completed; and the early dismissal of school for the remainder of the day.
  1. The overall safety of the students, faculty and staff will be the underlying basis for all decisions. The school will be evacuated and/or dismissed only in the most extreme cases.
  2. Appropriate action should be taken, as dictated by the results of the building search. If nothing is found as a result of the search, re-entry of the building, portion of the building or the conclusion of the emergency condition will be permitted.
  3. An investigation of the incident should be made by the local police or state police, as appropriate, and the Bell Atlantic Annoyance Call Division should be notified. The telephone number for NET is (603) 622-6233.
  4. Any person or persons guilty of making threatening phone calls should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Pembroke School Board will pursue such cases to the fullest extent possible.
