2
Purpose

  • To determine possible alternative(s) to the 4x4 block schedule

  • Final recommendation must be consistent with our school’s philosophy & beliefs
3
An “ideal” master schedule
  • The ideal schedule for PA should include:
  • Enrichment block of some kind
  • Learning labs / study halls
  • 60-70 minute classes
  • Flexibility for electives
  • Capacity to start over
  • Flexibility for year-long classes
4
Alternatives to the 4x4
  • Three basic alternatives were identified:
  • Trimester
    • Gilford, Winnacunnet
  • Alternating-day (“A-B block”)
    • Concord, Bow
  • Flex block (mixture of 45- and 90-minute classes)
    • Prospect Mountain, Sanborn Regional
5
Narrowing the field
  • After discussion & review of literature, the committee voted to pursue two possible schedules:
      • Trimester – visit to Gilford, phone interview with Winnacunnett
      • Flex block – visits to Prospect Mountain and Sanborn

6
Comparison
  • Flex Block
  • some 45, some 90 minute classes
  • 4-8 blocks per day
  • 4 terms per year
  • Some classes “start over” at midyear, others are year-long
  • Trimester
  • 60-70 minute classes for all
  • 5 blocks per day
  • 3 terms per year
  • 2 “start over” times
  • Lots of flexibility
7
Decision:
  • Trimester
8
The proposed schedule
9
Some comparisons
10
Details…
  • Departments would discuss & recommend if a class will run for one, two, or three trimesters

11
More details…
  • For 2T classes, departments would discuss & recommend if the trimesters need to be consecutive

12
More details…
  • Regardless of length of the class (1T, 2T, or 3T) credit would be awarded each trimester
    • Students would only need to repeat (or otherwise recover credit) for those trimester(s) that are failed
    • Class lists are not necessarily the same for Part A and Part B of a class
13
More details…
  • Departments need to agree on where the “split” is in curriculum units for 2T classes
    • So all “Chemistry part A” classes cover roughly the same curriculum

Remember the “Ideal” schedule?
  • The ideal schedule for PA should include:
  • Enrichment block of some kind
  • Learning labs / study halls
  • 60-70 minute classes
  • Flexibility for electives
  • Capacity to start over
  • Flexibility for yearlong classes

17
Pros vs. 4x4
  • Shorter class length
  • More options/flexibility
  • Return of “quarter” classes
  • Could reduce class sizes / offer more electives depending on dept. decisions
  • CRTC students would not lose PA class time
  • More opportunities to “start over”
  • More dynamic – can spread out core classes

18
Cons vs. 4x4
  • Change
  • Need time for discussion & decisions next year
  • A second “switch” time
  • Prep time / teaching time changes

19
To be decided…
  • If the trimester schedule is accepted, other decisions will need to be made:
    • Final exams
      • Some trimester schools do not schedule separate final exam time, others do.
    • SSR
      • How?  When?
    • Progress Reports
      • One or two per trimester?  Classroll eliminates?
    • Other schedules
      • Early release, late arrival, etc.

FAQ
  • Will I have to radically change/rewrite my lesson plans?
      • For the most part, the answer to that question is “no.”  But lessons will need to be adapted to fit 67-minute classes instead of 86 minutes.  Of course, the total hours available in most classes will increase (semester classes -> 2T classes).
21
More FAQ…
  • Will I have to rewrite/revise my course curriculum?
      • Yes and no.  Courses that will fit into two trimesters will only need to determine how to split the course – which units will be in Part A and which in Part B.  Courses that are redefined as single trimester courses will require more revision/editing.  The decisions as to what to include/exclude ultimately lies with the department and instructors.
