Spelling Tips for Parents
It’s important to encourage each child to become a better speller. The following steps will help your child learn spelling words more quickly and remember them longer. Begin this procedure early in the week to prepare for a spelling test. 1. Have your child pronounce each word on the spelling list. 2. Pronounce any words the child does not know and have him/her repeat the word three times. 3. After the list is completed, have your child repeat the words until all are pronounced correctly. 4. Have your child write every word three times. 5. Say each word and have your child write them on a magic slate or school paper. 6. Rewrite misspelled words on a 3" x 5" card for your child and practice the words daily before the spelling test. 7. Have your child say the word from the card; have him/her trace the word with a marker or crayon. 8. When the child feels he/she knows the word, cover the word and have him/her write it. 9. Check and move on to another word. 10. The evening before the spelling test say each word to your child and ask him/her to verbally spell the word. It is important to periodically review spelling words to develop lasting recall. Your child will utilize new words in his/her written vocabulary as he/she becomes confident with the spelling. |
