Know Your Teacher

Communication between home and school is essential to a successful school experience for your child. The best way to ensure that communication is to get to know your child’s teacher.

First, take advantage of any open house or parent day to introduce yourself to the teacher. Use this introductory time to set the groundwork for an open line of communication throughout the school year. Share any information about your child which might be of importance to the teacher. If opportunities to help in the classroom or help the teacher in any way arise, be the first to volunteer. Even busy parents can be of assistance. A couple of hours a week and special talents are always welcome. Being a volunteer will provide the opportunity to get to know the teacher and will be appreciated by your child.

Parent-teacher conferences provide the ideal time to get to know your child’s teacher. The conference gives you an opportunity to ask questions about your child’s progress and answer any questions the teacher may have. Use this time to focus on your child and find out how you can reinforce what is being taught at school.

Keep in touch with the teacher with periodic phone calls between conferences. Find out the best time to call, and use these conversations to review your child’s progress or discuss any problems. Also, inform the teacher of any changes in your child’s home circumstances which may affect school performance or behavior.

When report cards are sent home, it is good to respond with more than just a signature. Return the card with a quick note with any comments you may have about your child’s progress.

Write notes! Although it is important to discourage children from writing notes in the classroom, a short note of thanks or encouragement to the teacher is always appreciated. Share your excitement about new skills your child has learned.

Remember, you are working with the teacher to reach a common goal, that of educating your child. The above suggestions can all help reach the goal.
