School Board Notes By Peter Menard

At the regular May 1st, 2013, Deerfield School Board meeting,  the SAU’s Technology Director  Mary Rubega and DCS’s Technology Coordinator Deb Boisvert outlined the work the SAU has been  doing to support DCS internet and  network capabilities, as well as  requirements going forward.
Principal Paul Yergeau reported on the progress of interviews for  vacant positions of music  teacher  and technology support staff.  The administration is working on student placement for next year’s classes, with input from parents.   A draft plan for security updates for the school was presented, with further documentation being prepared by Don Gorman.

The Board is reviewing several policies in regard to Internet access and use at school, by students as well as staff.  Maryann Clark SCHOOL BOARD NOTES - P. Menard and Deb Boisvert will be refining these policies.

Deb Kelley reported on continuing research into the modular classrooms at DCS as part of the Board’s long range planning function.  Deb provided an update on the Curriculum Review Board’s work.

The Health and Wellness program is starting the process of reviewing their curriculum, while the Social Studies curriculum is ready to be brought before the Board for review in June.  A staff committee is also looking at the DCS report card and will bring ideas to the board in the future.

Deb followed up on a citizen’s comment about the dress code for staff at DCS, which will be explored further in upcoming meetings.  Recalling support of staff by school boards in past years when she was a teacher at DCS, Deb called for the board to re-vitalize its support of teacher achievements.  Maryann Clark reported on the new makeup of the Municipal Budget Committee.

The School Board members are Kevin Barry, Donald Gorman, Maryann Clark, Peter Menard, and Debra Kelley.

Upcoming Meetings:      May 16 th , 2013  non– public meeting on high school options  June 5, 2013  6:00 P.M. ~ regular  meeting at Deerfield Community  School

PTO Ice Cream Trucks

Today is the last day of “Teacher Appreciation Week”.  On Monday the teachers and staff were welcomed to school with an ice cream truck themed bulletin board and “coffee cart”.  On Tuesday, two ice cream trucks arrived to surprise the teachers and students.  Most of the money used to pay for the ice cream trucks was raised at the “Celebrate DCS” spaghetti dinner in March by the DEA and donated to the PTO. Technically, the teachers paid for the student’s ice cream and the PTO paid for the teacher’s.  Either way, it was a great treat for the whole school and the beautiful weather and mu-sic from the trucks added to the excitement!  Wednesday and Thursday brought a restocking of the teacher’s “K” cups and bagels for breakfast.  On Friday, we served a lovely lunch that included sandwiches, homemade salads and desserts.  As always, the PTO is grateful to the room parents who helped coordinate the donated items, the many parents who sent in baked items or beautiful salads and the volunteers who donated their time to help work at these events.  We would also like to thank Northeast Ice Cream in Exeter, Walmart and Panera Bread in Concord for offering us discounted or donated items.  Lastly, thank you to all the great DCS teachers.  This week is always fun for us, but we do appreciate your efforts year-round.

Deerfield Attendance Policy

Attendance is an important part to a student's success in school. August 01, 2012 the Deerfield School board approved the Attendance, Absenteeism, and Truancy Policy. The board considers the following to be excused absences: ·

    Illness ·
    Recovery from an accident ·
    Required court attendance ·
    Medical and dental appointments ·
    Death in the immediate family·
Observation or celebration of a bona fide religious holiday ·
Such other good cause as may be acceptable to the principal or permitted by law.
In order to make sure your child receives an excused absence in our student system, please make sure that you call, send a note, or e-mail the main office to inform the school of your student's illness and absence. For other absences the parent must provide a written notice.

Because of your tremendous enthusiasm and ongoing efforts to help our students, our school has once again been recognized with the Blue Ribbon for Volunteerism. This award is presented annually by the New Hampshire Partners in Education, a volunteer organization whose mission is to enhance and enrich the education of children through school volunteerism.

This award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of school volunteer coordinators and their volunteer teams for the achievements realized during the previous school year. We echo the sentiment that your tireless efforts bring opportunities to our children that otherwise would never be possible. Again, thank you for your dedication to our students and your partnership with our school.

Morning Drop Off

This year we have many more students being dropped off in the morning. This has resulted in an increase in the amount of time it takes to have students enter the building. To keep students from being late to class, we are asking you to have your child exit the vehicle in a timely manner.

If your child is not ready to exit the car, please pull around to the parking area, which will allow the flow of traffic to continue. In order to make this process more efficient, and you are the first car to the front, please pull forward to the last green cone. This will allow for an increase in "groups" of cars, which will decrease the amount of time you have to wait in line and allow students to be on time to class.
